New Orleans – Gardens and Mansions by Rail and Air

Featuring New Orleans and Cajun Country

February 15 – 22, 2014

Our eight-day winter getaway takes us from the snowy Midwest to historic New Orleans, famous for Dixieland jazz, unique architecture, celebrated cuisine, and the fascinating French Quarter.

Train enthusiasts will appreciate being transported via Amtrak from Chicago to New Orleans. We'll enjoy a three-night stay in the exciting French Quarter. Highlights include a French Quarter walking tour featuring the St. Louis Cathedral and rectory with adjoining Cabildo, Bourbon Street, Pirates Alley, and the French Marketplace. We'll enjoy café au lait and beignets at Café du Monde, a relaxing Mississippi River cruise on the Steamboat Natchez, and
dinner at the famous Court of Two Sisters. A city tour takes us to the Garden District, with some of the best-preserved historic southern mansions in the United States. We'll visit Longue Vue Gardens and House, a National Historic Landmark. Dinner will be prepared for us at the New Orleans School of Cooking.

We will travel to Baton Rouge and stop at the New State Capitol Building to admire the Art Deco architecture and hear stories about Huey Long, the state's famous politician. A visit to the Louisiana State Museum will acquaint us with Louisiana history, industry, and culture. Then it's off to Natchez, Mississippi, a beautiful town that captures the charm and elegance of the historic South with its antebellum mansions. We'll enjoy a Natchez-area tour and visit two beautiful antebellum mansions.

Returning to Louisiana, we'll explore Cajun country with its unique blend of French, Creole, and Caribbean influences. A unique experience will be our eerie Bayou cruise. Other inclusions are a visit to the Jean Lafitte Cultural Center to learn about the life of the famous pirate, the bayou town Vermillionville, a Tabasco factory tour on Avery Island, and dinner at Pont Breaux's, famous for its Cajun cuisine and sounds. We will fly home with many wonderful memories when our tour concludes.

Cost is $2,399* based on double occupancy; add $575 for single. A $300 deposit is due with reservation, and the final payment is due December 1.
