Bank History
American Trust has been a community pillar since 1911. We have grown to strengthen the products, services, and financial management we can provide to our customers while retaining the integrity and commitment that can only be found through a community bank. After three generations of growth, ATBancorp was formed in 1985 to serve as the bank holding company for American Trust & Savings Bank. Today ATBancorp is a two-bank holding company for American Trust (Iowa) and American Bank & Trust–Wisconsin. Headquartered in Dubuque, IA, ATBancorp is a banking organization with assets in excess of $900 million serving nine communities through seventeen banking facilities in Eastern and Central Iowa and Southwest Wisconsin.
But our story begins in December 1911, when several Dubuque business people obtained a charter for the German American Savings Bank. Nicholas J. Schrup, one of the founding fathers, became the first president. The bank's name was changed during WWI to American Trust & Savings Bank.
American Trust is one of only two banks established in Dubuque that survived the Great Depression. The bank began its second half-century of service to Dubuque in 1962 with a decade defined by changes and additions. American Trust added a state-of-the-art motor bank office at Ninth and Locust streets, and a third banking office opened on Dubuque's west side on Kennedy Road, where a modern, spacious office now operates. The 1970s and 1980s brought more growth to the bank. American Trust opened offices in Key West, IA, and at 32nd and Jackson streets in Dubuque. The bank also developed a presence in Dyersville, IA, with the acquisition of the National Bank of Dyersville in 1986. In the early 1990s, American Trust was the first financial institution in the Dubuque area to open a supermarket office. The bank continued to expand its services in 2003, demonstrated by the construction of a new facility at the 32nd Street location and a new office in Farley, IA. In February 2005, American Trust expanded into Central Iowa. The West Des Moines office is managed as a local community bank offering retail, commercial banking, and wealth management services. In May 2007, a second office was opened in Hawthorne Plaza. In April 2010, the original Westown Parkway office was consolidated into the Hawthorne Plaza location.
In the fall of 2006, a brand new banking office was opened in Key West, IA. American Trust was proud to create a unique banking experience provided by a partnership with Hartig Drug Company. This new office is located within Hartig Drug at 1600 University Ave, Dubuque, and opened in March 2007. In November 2007, American Trust expanded into the west end of Dubuque with an office at the intersection of Northwest Arterial and Asbury Road.
In 1998, ATBancorp acquired the Cuba City State Bank in Cuba City and Hazel Green, WI. ATBancorp announced the expansion of services in Wisconsin with a new office in Lancaster in 2001. All three Wisconsin offices were united under the new name of American Bank & Trust–WI. The year 2002 brought added growth with an office in Fennimore, WI. In July 2006, American Bank's newest office opened in Platteville, WI.
The Financial Management Group division of American Trust continues to be a key strategic unit of the bank. With assets under management exceeding $1.4 billion, it is one of the largest independent Iowa-based operations in trust and related services. The Financial Management Group offers clients wealth management, retirement planning, investment, and brokerage services.
Throughout the years, ATBancorp has developed a strong reputation for providing outstanding service to its clients and strongly supporting its local communities. ATBancorp is proud of this tradition and looks forward to serving its clients and communities in the future.
